![]() ![]() On a head that doesn't neatly match the curvature of the headband, it could cause some discomfort. The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 isn’t uncomfortable, but just how comfortable it will be is going to vary considerably. ![]() The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 has plastic that feels like it came out of a mediocre 3D printer. Sure, you can hear what’s around you like with open-back headphones, but that’s generally not on the list of pros for that style of headphone. My experience with open-back headphones is that they provide a much wider soundstage than closed-back headphones, and this just doesn’t do that. I will note that Beyerdynamic suggests the feature makes the MMX 200 more like open-back headphones. The feature also stands in for mic sidetone, letting you better hear your own voice while speaking, which handily prevents shouting in the middle of a firefight in a game. The Beyerdynamic MMX 200’s Augmented Audio Mode offers just that. If you often wear headphones out in public or just want to be able to hear what’s going on around you at home, ambient sound mode lets you listen to your headphones but still hear your surroundings. The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 provides good noise isolation, and while they don’t completely block out all sounds (read: no active noise cancelation), it prevents enough sound from coming in that I can comfortably keep listening with a low volume. When you want to tune into your games, you can either crank up the volume and risk hearing damage so that nothing interrupts your ability to hear the game or you can get cans with good noise isolation and continue to listen at reasonable, safe volumes. If you remove the boom mic, the headset’s internal microphones will kick in, but they’re not nearly as good. The headset doesn’t have active noise cancelation on the mic and can pick up a little from the surrounding environment, but the tradeoff is a much better sounding voice than the competitors. Think “silky tones of a late-night radio host talking gently into their condenser microphone”. Some are decent, like the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7 with its smart enhancements, but the Beyerdynamic MMX 200 captures my voice on another level. I made recordings with and without much background noise, and in both cases, the mic picked up my voice with a smoothness, richness, and clarity that very few wireless options provide. If that’s the case for the Beyerdynamic MMX 200, I’d love to see what a wired version of this headset sounds like because the mic quality on this thing is excellent. One thing that’s almost universal among wireless gaming headsets is that their microphone quality is well below that of their wired counterparts. The mic is stunningly good for a wireless headset Testing the Beyerdynamic MMX200 with a Pixel 7 Pro, it supported AAC but not higher-quality codecs like aptX HD or LDAC. ![]() It is also worth noting that the audio quality over Bluetooth doesn’t hold up as well. You’ll have to find your own app for EQ settings, though, as the headset doesn’t come with any software. If you prefer heavier bass, you can run an equalizer to boost it. That balanced starting point also provides room for tweaks. These cans offer plenty of impact, too, with the scream of a Howler setting off a chase and the huffing of many zombies hounding me down in Dying Light 2 coming through loud and clear. Meanwhile, in Overwatch 2, I can keep track of the many different sound cues the game offers even as the chaos ramps up, so no amount of gunfire stops me from hearing a Hanzo ultimate go off. Listening to Of Montreal’s False Priest, I can easily pick out the various instruments layered together. Bass tones don’t blow over the rest of the frequencies like they can on other gaming headsets, and the mids and treble come through with fair precision. These headphones offer a clean, neutral sound without latency thanks to the dedicated wireless transmitter. Sound is the first job of a gaming headset, and the Beyerdynamic MMX 200 gets it right. The Beyerdynamic MMX 200 can play an analog signal alongside Bluetooth, but not from two wireless sources.
